Artists - JOHN GIBBONS - Biography
John Gibbons was born in Ireland in 1949. A pupil of Sir Anthony Caro's at St Martin's in the seventies, he has shown internationally virtually since leaving art school.
He is currently Professor of Sculpture at Winchester School of Art and is represented by the Flowers Gallery.
John Gibbons' sculptures are in constructed steel. His earlier work included sometimes recognisable elements of found scrap objects, plates and colour but since the mid nineties these have given way to the pure, linear material of stainless steel rods. Transparent, skeletal containers of varying complexity and scale have consistently been emerging since, in a continuing exploration of interior and exterior space. There is order here and symmetry, together with an intense connection with both physical and spiritual aspects of human experience. |
