Artists - LEE GRANDJEAN - Biography
Born in 1949, Lee Grandjean grew up in Southeast London, Romania and Harlow. He had a studio in Shoreditch then Greenwich before moving to the Norfolk farmhouse where he now lives.
A walk across the yard takes him into the old barn, his current studio. He travels to London regularly to teach at the Royal College of Art where he is Senior Tutor in the Sculpture School.
The content and subject matter of his most recent work has called for a move away from carving in wood - the method and material with which Grandjean has been most closely associated for a number of years - as the new forms that he wished to explore demanded materials with other properties. The excitement he has felt as different forms became possible and began to emerge in his work is evident in the energy of his latest sculptures. His interest in fluid states and continual change has led him to read widely in fields as varied as cosmology, microbiology and particle physics. There is an ambitious aim at the heart of Grandjean's project as a sculptor: to give physical form to states of being whose essence is to remain indefinable, fluctuating and mysterious. |
