Tortoises with Triangle and Time, 2000
Wendy Taylor
Wendy Taylor's work divides neatly into two broad groups: one shows the detailed observation and fine modelling of the subjects she studies from life, while the other consists of sophisticated and more conceptual pieces of engineering that allow her imagination freedom to tie brickwork into a knot and make heavy frames of steel appear to levitate. This work demonstrates both.
Two tortoises face each other across an arena. One, a female, carries the gnomon (or pointer) of a 16-foot high sundial on her back. The other, a male, calls to her from where the hours are marked out on the ground. What will happen if she moves towards him? Will the gnomon fall? Will it be the end of time? The sundial is permanently sited in Holland Park, London. |
