Bronze Head of the Stairs, 2000
Ivor Abrahams RA
The stairs in Abrahams' home became suddenly unfamiliar when his son repainted them, leading the artist to look at them with renewed interest. This sculpture presents a variety of views all at once as it plays with a re-arrangement of images. Architectural features, such as dado rails and cornicing, compete with stair treads and dark openings in this re-presentation of the experience of looking at and moving through a real set of spaces. The painter's eye for colour comes together with the founder's skills to produce an intricately patinated bronze.
Acquired for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea through a grant from KCEL, the sculpture is permanently sited outside the public entrance to the Town Hall in Hornton Street, London. |
