Deemster Fish, 1996
Bryan Kneale
Shown sited in Holland Park, London, this sculpture is an abstracted fish form, specifically that of a herring. It is one of a series Bryan Kneale made when he was commissioned by the Deemsters to make a work for the Law Courts in the Isle of Man. The properties of corten steel allow an openness and suppleness in the forms that are highly appropriate for the subject's speed and agility.
A twisting spiky plane stands in for the fish's spine. The herring is an important symbol in Manx tradition and is of special significance to the Deemsters, the island's Law Lords. They swear an oath to be impartial in their judgements in the same way as the animal's spine runs through the centre of its body, favouring neither side over the other. |
