Untold, 1999-2001
John Gibbons
Semi-reflective bars are welded together to create a symmetrical transparent structure with a shimmery outline. Although this appears orderly and purposeful it also seems to deny any function. The bars may initially seem to refer to a cage of some kind, but there are defined points of entry and exit that are permanently open. Both the steel and the clean lines seem to make references to the built environment but the masculine severity of straight lines is played off against more female, natural and organic curved ones. This meditative piece is a challenge to interpret. |
