Argosy, 2002
William Pye
The main activity of Lloyds Register of Shipping is the classification of cargo vessels, ensuring that correct specifications are adhered to in construction and that older ships are properly maintained. The water sculpture was conceived and developed with this history in mind.
Water adheres to the underside of the hull form demonstrating the 'coanda' effect, covering the whole 'hull' with a thin glistening layer without falling away except at each pointed end. Here its volume becomes too great for the surface tension to hold and gravity takes over. Standing alongside a tall building, as it does, attention was given to how Argosy would look from above as well as from ground level.
