Portfolio - Promenade
Created in 1996 for the Paris-based exhibition, "A century of British Sculpture", 'Promenade' was first shown in the Tuileries Gardens. Its five elements in welded and painted steel make up Sir Anthony Caro's largest single work to date.
Anna Stamatiou proposed an exhibition of 'Promenade', which had never been seen in the UK, to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. She raised £15,000 in sponsorship and won an award from the Government's Pairing Scheme to support the project. The exhibition took place over the summer of 1998 on the North Lawn of Holland Park, London. The site was levelled and landscaped with a newly created avenue, which has now been restored to its original condition.
The installation was controversial and caused much comment and debate. The scale of it and the attention it received paved the way for the exhibition Bronze, organised for the Royal Borough by Ann Elliott, which took place during the year 2000 and showed the work of thirty contemporary sculptors. |
